So, I often get asked about this strange and wonderful thing called ‘Steampunk’. To be honest, I didn’t know that much about it myself until I was asked by the good people at Cogsmith Publishing to submit a story to their Steampunk anthology ‘Airships and Automata‘.

But once I committed to writing my story, ‘The Incredible Airship Circus’, it was a little bit like a light bulb went on for the first time. Suddenly, I became involved in this amazing subculture of literature, art, fashion and alternative history.

For those of you that don’t know anything about it, check out this handy guide created by the fantastic authors at The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences. They have done the hard work for you and gathered together all the best definitions for the genre in one easy to access place.

But for me, as a lover of all things historical, I find the genre to be a fantastically imaginative way to blend Victorian history with science fiction. As a literary style, it portrays an alternative history with steam power at its heart. Fiction can vary from lighthearted to darker social commentaries on the establishment.

But Steampunk is more than just books. It has outgrown the confines of the written page and had influenced fashion, jewellery, photography, architectural design, music, film, and almost any creative outlet you can imagine.

And I for one find it a fantastic source of inspiration!
